This group uses the Kawa Model to explore life flow, barriers, and supports. It is a practical reflection activity that explores occupation in the context of the environment and supports available. This activity works well as the second or third session in a program sequence, building on initial relationship-building and self-awareness activities and basic understanding of occupation.

The Kawa Model was developed by occupational therapist Michael Iwama (2006). It uses the metaphor of a river (kawa) to explore life flow and perceived strengths, challenges, and resources.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will demonstrate increased self-awareness regarding personal barriers and supports, improved ability to reframe challenges as navigable obstacles rather than insurmountable problems, and enhanced understanding of their support systems and resources. This activity builds resilience thinking and prepares students for active problem-solving during university transitions.
